Employing the traditional Mexican craft technique of hand-cut perforated paper, this piece shapes light by allowing light to go through it and casting a blue shadow. Using light as a transformative quality, this piece gestures to my own identity, having both queer and Mexican folklore symbols. Tlanchana or Atl-tonan-chane in Nahuatl — half serpent, half-human — is observed in her two forms, posing as her mythological form, hiding a second head — a second life, also seen in her reflection. The phrase “Ser 2” (Being 2) reflects on her dual nature, which resonates with the quotidian life of a queer person in contemporary Mexico.
